Aims of Job/Job Purpose

The role of a Main Grade Lecturer (MGL) at South Birmingham College is to support the College’s aims, objectives and mission statement to provide high quality, education and training in response to local need.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  1. Required to teach on range of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning courses (including Technical Certificate, NVQ and FGas)
  1. Have a flexible and innovative approach to the management of the student learning programme.
  1. Liaise with employers and managing agencies and other organisations as appropriate.
  1. Carry out appropriate course administration including lesson plans and schemes of work.
  1. Comply with the Quality Assurance procedures of the College.
  1. Maintain and develop appropriate learning resources.
  1. Participate in College Enrolment, Induction and Open Days and attend meetings, marketing events and other relevant functions as required by the line manager.
  1. Ensure “In Attendance” time is carried out to meet the needs of the students.
  1. Set targets for improvement and provide constructive feedback on progress.
  1. Assist in the development of appropriate curriculum initiatives.
  1. Work with others to monitor, evaluate and improve the effectiveness of learning, including the use of lesson observations.

General

A Main Grade Lecturer will contribute to the College and satisfy the Lifelong Learning UK 5 questions contained in the Common Inspection Framework (CIF), published by the Ofsted and ALI inspectorates. These are:-

a) How well do learners achieve?

b) How effective are teaching, training and learning?

c) How well do the programmes and activities meet the needs and interests of learners?

d) How well are learners guided and supported?

e) How effective are leadership and management in raising achievement and supporting all learners?

It is the responsibility of all MGL’s;

f) to contribute to the College achieving its strategic aims

g) to understand and apply the College’s relevant policies, procedures and practices

h) to meet the professional requirements by working to Lifelong Learning’s new professional standards and conform to agreed codes of professional practice and conduct

Teaching Standards

All MGL’s will work towards evidencing competence. To implement a strategy for the continuous quality improvement in educational standards including retention, achievement and success rates in teaching and supporting learning. These include professional knowledge and understanding, skills and attributes and the key areas of teaching are:-

  1. Assessing learners’ needs
  1. Planning and preparing teaching and learning programmes for groups and individuals
  1. Developing and using a range of teaching and learning techniques
  1. Managing the learning process
  1. Providing learners with support
  1. Assessing the outcomes of learners and learners’ achievements
  1. Reflecting upon and evaluating one’s own performance and planning future practice
  1. Meeting professional requirements

Each MGL will engage in the College’s, self-assessment procedures against these criteria. Identified targets for development should be considered with the relevant line manager and assessed at an annual appraisal in which the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) process is undertaken.

a) Comply with internal and external quality standards and contribute to the College’s strategic aims.

b) Comply with college policies and procedures and health and safety regulations.

c) Support the safeguarding and promotion of students’ welfare.

d) Maintain confidentiality in relation to all College information and to comply with Data Protection Legislation.

e) Participate in the College’s Appraisal scheme and undertake any training as required.

f) Support and actively participate in the implementation of the College’s Equal Opportunity policies.
