Do you consider yourself a bit of a detective with a passion for London’s history? Can you reveal the hidden stories connecting people and objects at the Museum of London? If the answer is yes and you enjoy museum documentation, we want to hear from you.
This post is offered as a 9 month fixed term contract
We are seeking a committed person to assist the Registrar in delivering the Historic Loans Project. You will undertake the investigation of a significant backlog of expired long loans-in to ensure better accountability of collections and mitigate legal, financial and operational risks.
Working closely with curatorial, documentation and collections care staff, you will administer the acquisition, return to owner or loan renewal of the objects identified in accordance with best practice, legal obligations and national museum standards for due diligence. You will research the Museum’s own records and appropriate public records to trace and contact the original lender and/or current owner, and formalise the status of each object.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with a wide range of people and the breadth of our collections to improve collections management standards. Previous experience of museum loans administration including knowledge of insurance, packing and transport requirements and relevant standards is essential.
You will be highly organised with good attention to detail and the ability to prioritise to meet project deadlines. An effective communicator with a high degree of computer literacy, you will have practical experience of using a collection management system to document loans. Experience of family history research is desirable.
The closing date for applications is 22 August 2012 at 5pm. Interviews will be held on 13 September 2012.
