Completing Your Application Form

Please read before completing your form

Ensure that you have completed the top section of the application form stating the job you are applying for, closing date and reference number if applicable. It is important that you fill in this section accurately and in full. Please do not leave any sections blank.

Relevant Skills, Knowledge and Experience: This is the key part of the application form. Here you’ll need to look at the Person Profile in the application pack and give good examples of how you think you match the Skills, knowledge and experience listed.

For this section you should try to:

  • Look at the Person Profile, think of a work situation that evidences each point of the criteria on the Person Profile;
  • explain, in some detail, what you did in terms of skills, knowledge, experience and processes that YOU used;
  • describe a positive result or personal learning point.

Think about these answers carefully; bear in mind the selection criteria stated in the job advert or job profile, and ask yourself what skills, knowledge & experience or aptitude is this question trying to test?

Use a range of examples - using the same one over and over again will make your experience appear more limited.

Use specific examples and use words or phrases which reflect those in the job advert / person profile.

You must complete ALL sections of the application form as clearly as possible. Although we would prefer that you use the on-line application if a hard copy application is unsuitable, it can be hand-written or typed. You can use additional sheets of paper as necessary but make sure they are securely attached to your application form, with your name and job reference number on each page.

CV’s can only be accepted as additional information. If you are applying on-line please note that you cannot attach additional information to your application, and can only copy and paste this into the relevant section of your on-line application.

We will decide who will be shortlisted for an interview by comparing your completed application form with the Person Profile. Remember, we can only assess your ability to do the job by comparing the details that you give on your application form with the Person Profile for the job.

Applicants must complete the reference section of the form and unless otherwise indicated references will only be taken up on the offer of employment being made. Candidates who are already employed by the Council should give the name of their current line manager as their referee; agency workers should list the agency they are currently employed by as the first referee. You may also wish to give the names of teachers, lecturers, and other professionals (this must not be a relative), if you do not have sufficient work references.

Your completed form must be returned before the closing date - applications received after the closing date will not usually be considered

If you have any queries about completing your application form, please telephone the contact number identified in the advert.

In the interest of economy, it is not the Council’s policy to notify candidates who have been unsuccessful and generally if you have not heard within 6-8 weeks you should assume that this is the case. Nevertheless, the Council is appreciative of your interest in this appointment.

Under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998 the information you give us will only be used for the purpose of this recruitment.
